Evo vs Modo in Vancouver: Complete Car Share Guide

By snowroad
2026-02-26

I remember the second week after I first immigrated to Vancouver. I needed to go to Ikea in Richmond to buy some household items. Looking at the 40-minute bus transfer route on Google Maps and then at the shopping list in my hand, I knew it was time to seriously research car rental options in Vancouver. That was the day I started researching Evo, and later I also signed up for Modo. I used them consistently until I bought my first car, and during that time, I deeply appreciated how important these two services are for residents and travelers without private cars.

For friends coming from Asia, you may be used to ubiquitous taxis and efficient public transportation systems. But Vancouver is different; the urban design here relies more on cars, and many supermarkets, malls, and attractions are not near Skytrain stations. If you are a traveler or have just moved to Vancouver, the good news is that you don’t need to buy a car immediately. Evo and Modo, two car-sharing services, offer flexible solutions. Today I will compare these two services in detail to help you find the choice that suits you best.

What are Evo and Modo? Vancouver Car Sharing Basics

First, let me explain the basic concepts of these two services because they are quite different from traditional car rentals in Asia.

Evo Car Share is a one-way car-sharing service. The biggest feature is that you can pick up and return the car at any legal parking spot within the service area; you don’t need to return to the starting point. Imagine seeing an Evo in Yaletown, unlocking it with the mobile app to drive away, and then parking it at a street parking spot in Metrotown when you’re done. Almost the entire fleet consists of Toyota hybrid cars (Prius series and Corolla), with currently over 1,500 cars on the road. The most attractive part is: there is no fixed monthly fee, you only pay when you actually use the car.

Modo Car Co-op is a traditional round-trip car-sharing service. You need to book a specific vehicle and return the car to the same parking spot after use. Modo has over 180 fixed parking spots in the Greater Vancouver area, with a fleet of over 800 vehicles, including various models: sedans, SUVs, vans, and even electric cars. This service requires a monthly fee (or annual fee), but the hourly rate is cheaper for long-term use.

Price Comparison: Evo vs Modo Cost Breakdown

Evo vs Modo

This is the part everyone cares about most. Let me use the chart below to illustrate the price difference between the two.

Evo Fee Structure

Evo’s fees are very simple: a starting fee of $1.85, then $0.49 per minute, calculated based on actual minutes used. The hourly rate is capped at $17.99, and the daily rate is capped at $104.99. Beyond this amount, except for the Passenger Vehicle Rental Tax (PVRT), there are no additional charges for the day. Gas, insurance, and parking fees (within the service zone) are all included in the charge. Registration requires a $35 registration fee and a $2 annual insurance fee.

Remember to read to the end, I have secured a discount for everyone from the official source, allowing you to easily save the $35 registration fee!

From the fee models, it’s clear that Evo is suitable for short trips and intra-district commuting, while Modo is more economical for planned trips of 3 hours or more. My own usage habit is: use Evo for supermarket runs and impromptu dates on weekdays, and choose Modo for skiing in Whistler or traveling to Victoria on weekends. This maximizes the advantages of both.

Service Area Comparison: Where Can You Drive?

This is one of the biggest differences between the two services.

Evo Service Zone

Evo’s service area is relatively small, mainly concentrated in:

  • Vancouver
  • New Westminster
  • YVR International Airport
  • Parts of North Vancouver (Partial)
  • Parts of Burnaby (Partial)

You can freely park and return the car within these areas. Although you can drive the car outside the zone, you must return to the zone to end the trip and stop the billing timer. If you often go to Richmond, Surrey, or West Vancouver for day trips, Evo might not be suitable. For people living downtown or near Skytrain lines, Evo’s coverage is actually quite sufficient. And for travelers, they also have pick-up and drop-off points at Vancouver Airport. If you have too much luggage after getting off the plane and want a car to move around, Evo is also a great choice.

Modo Service Zone

You can drive a Modo car anywhere, just remember to return to the original parking spot before the booking time ends. This is very convenient for people who need to go to the far suburbs or for weekend trips.

Modo-Map

I remember my first trip to Victoria was renting a Modo car. I drove from Vancouver to Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal, took the ferry to Vancouver Island, played in Victoria for two days, and then returned the car to Vancouver the same way. The entire trip cost was indeed a bit cheaper than Evo.

Vehicle Selection: Fleet Comparison and Availability

Evo Fleet

Evo’s fleet is very simple: the mainstay consists of Toyota hybrid cars. Mainly Prius, Prius C (four-door hatchback), and Corolla (sedan), there are also a small number of pure electric KIA Niro EVs, all charged at the same rate. On their app, you can see the model, license plate, and location of each car, but because it is usually for short-term use and vehicle maintenance is done well, I usually use whichever car is closest on the App.

Modo Fleet

Modo’s fleet is much more diverse. Their fleet has multiple different brands and models. From sedans, hatchbacks, SUVs, electric cars to pickup trucks. However, note that popular models (especially SUVs and vans) need to be booked in advance on weekends and holidays, sometimes even a week in advance. Evo is available instantly; as long as there is a car nearby, you can drive it away immediately.

Can travelers and friends who just moved join Evo and Modo with an international driver’s license?

I asked this question back then too. The answer is: both are possible, but the procedures take a little more effort.

For Evo, friends holding a non-BC driver’s license (including foreign licenses) can apply, but need to provide a photo of the front and back of the driver’s license, as well as a two-year driving record issued by the original licensing authority. If the record is not in English, it needs to be translated. And registration may not be completed in the app; you need to contact customer service separately. Special note: If you have already moved to BC, you must exchange for a BC driver’s license within 90 days of becoming a member, otherwise your eligibility will be affected.

Modo’s requirements are roughly similar to Evo’s, requiring a valid driver’s license, a summary of a two-year driving record (non-English must be translated by an ICBC-approved translator), and a credit card under your own name. If your driver’s license was issued outside of Canada, Modo recommends checking the ICBC website or contacting the embassy of your place of origin to learn how to obtain a driving record. Once the documents are ready, just email them to documents@Modo.coop. It is worth noting that Modo, as a cooperative organization, is relatively stricter in approving international driver’s licenses, and there may be additional fees. It is recommended to contact their customer service directly for confirmation if there are any questions.

I have a friend who traveled specifically from Hong Kong and applied for an Evo account before departure. He said that relying on Evo for transportation, he played in Vancouver much more freely than he expected.

Advice for International Travelers

If you are a short-term visitor holding an international driver’s license:

  • City tourism: Evo can be used
  • Suburbs or inter-city: Consider traditional car rental companies (Hertz, Enterprise, etc.) which may be more cost-effective
  • Long-distance travel (more than 5 days): Weekly rates for traditional car rentals are usually more favorable

For friends who have just moved to Vancouver, I strongly recommend:

  1. Step 1: Exchange your Hong Kong driver’s license for a BC driver’s license as soon as possible (can be exchanged directly within 90 days after immigration, no re-test required)
  2. Step 2: Register for Evo first to familiarize yourself with the road environment in Vancouver
  3. Step 3: Register for Modo a few months later and start exploring the Greater Vancouver area
  4. Step 4: Decide whether to buy a car after using them for a year

The driving environment in Vancouver is completely different from Hong Kong: wide roads, faster speeds, and ample parking spaces. Adapting slowly with shared cars is much safer and more economical than buying a car right away.

Additional Tips and FAQs

Insurance Coverage

Both services include basic insurance (third-party liability and vehicle damage insurance), but there is a deductible. Evo’s deductible is $250, while Modo has different deductibles depending on membership level, ranging from $1,000 to $2,500. Evo is operated by a local insurance company, so the insurance deductible may be more affordable.

Traffic Tickets

If you receive a traffic ticket (speeding, illegal parking, etc.) during use, it will be automatically transferred to your account. Remember to obey traffic rules; traffic tickets in BC are expensive!

Cleaning and Damage

Both services require keeping the vehicle clean. If you dirty the vehicle (such as traveling with a dog, spilling drinks), you should clean it yourself or pay a cleaning fee. Report any damage immediately on the App to avoid being mistaken for causing it.

Customer Support

  • Evo: 24-hour customer service phone line, in-App live chat function, fast response speed
  • Modo: Phone support during office hours, email response usually within 24 hours

Conclusion: Start a New Life in Vancouver with Car Sharing Services

From a new immigrant who just arrived in Vancouver and knew nothing about local transportation to now being able to shuttle freely in the Greater Vancouver area, Evo and Modo, these two car-sharing services, played an important role in my adaptation process. They allowed me not to make the major decision of buying a car immediately, yet enjoy the convenience and freedom of having a car.

For friends coming from Hong Kong, I know that at first, you will feel that the pace of life here is slow, the distances are far, and having to drive for everything is very unaccustomed. But believe me, when you master the skills of using these shared cars, you will find that Vancouver is actually a very easy city to live in. Driving to the seaside for a walk on weekends, hiking in the mountains, and exploring the food in different communities—these are lifestyles unimaginable in Hong Kong.

Remember to register in advance, understand the rules, and make good use of the different advantages of the two services. If you have any questions about the usage process, the customer service of both companies is very friendly and professional. I wish you a smooth and pleasant driving experience in Vancouver!
